Reflecting so far on 2018 and #unlockhorns

In my last blog I mentioned that I have grown by an immeasurable amount on both a personal and professional level since deciding to #goitalone and dive into the unknown world of self employment and mediation

On a professional level I am learning lessons and growing every day. Sometimes I do not recognise myself in situations and I feel secretly proud of what and who I have become. A commercial legal environment can have a way of keeping you in a certain place and making you believe that there is only one route to where you think you need to be. Each day I realise even more that that attitude could not be further from the truth. Entering a new profession as well as learning to run a business may make many people run a mile and that is fine. For me it is exciting and nerve wracking and gives me a real spring in my step each day. Some decisions that I have made are the right ones and others are most definitely the wrong ones and with each decision I learn from it and take from it what I can. It is part and parcel of running a business.

Managing people as a business woman as well as laywer and a mediator has also brought its challenges. Both good ones and difficult ones. Each one being overcome in the end with a fist pump in the air (either an obvious one or a subtle one depending on where I am).

Juggling the consultancy roles along with growing the Concentus brand has been exhausting and it will come as no surprise that the consultancy roles can dominate if you let them and for a period of time I did let them. I would find myself working on Concentus at midnight once I had finished client work, traveling all over the country to do mediations and then working afterwards in hotel rooms on other things. It suddenly struck me that this is exactly what I did not want to do and the whole reason that I left private practice in the first place. So it was time to make the decision and focus on what I wanted to do which is mediate all of the time. Another big decision well ahead of time, another one that is fraught with risk and difficulty but is also exciting with many opportunities ahead.

On a personal level I have grown immensely, I am learning how to be a good mammy to Rosie every day, it certainly does not come with a pocket set of instructions and in some ways is a million miles away from the structure of the legal world but in others is very similar to the litigation world where no day is the same, things come left field ALL of the time and you have to crack on and get on with it, fly by the seat of your pants and make an educated decision on what to do next. She has reminded me what it is to really belly laugh, to switch off from the world and take in the moment and that the world is always your oyster and you can be whoever you want to be.
